Day 4
A 200-Million-Year-Old Rainforest
New Zealand’s incredible biodiversity is on display as you venture into the Whirinaki Forest, a lush 200-million-year-old jungle home to Tane Mahuta, the Māori god of the forest. The forest is renowned for its mighty ancient trees and rare and endangered native birds. As you explore, listen for the calls of brown kiwi, kākā (parrots), whio (blue duck), and endangered kārearea (New Zealand Falcon). You’ll dance a haka, a Māori war dance, before enjoying a memorable dining experience. On the menu tonight is a hāngī traditional pit BBQ dinner. Seafood, meats, and vegetables are placed in baskets and cooked on hot stones in a pit dug into the ground. Wet cloth and a mound of dirt cover the pile to trap the heat while cooking the food for hours. The result is an unbelievably tender and flavorful meal with smoky, earthen flavors.

Frequently asked questions
What will the weather be like?
In New Zealand, summer lasts from November until March, with January and February being the warmest months. The rain in New Zealand is geographic in nature; the west coast is wetter than the east, so you’ll typically experience a mixed bag as you move throughout the country. Rain can happen at any time of year, and it is not uncommon to experience three seasons in one day. We like to think that there's no such thing as bad weather—only bad preparation! Pack well and you'll be happy.
When should I travel if seeing penguins is a top priority?
October is arguably the best month of the year for wildlife, birdlife, and penguin viewing at Lake Moeraki. Birds are breeding and the rainforest flowers are out during October. The penguins can be generally be seen here from October to December.
Can dietary restrictions be accommodated?
We can cater to all dietary restrictions and allergies—just let us know at the time of booking.
What are the Visa and/or passport requirements for this trip?
Visa requirements for New Zealand vary depending on traveler citizenship. If you’re visiting New Zealand for three months or less, and are a citizen of the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, or the European Union, you’ll need to go online to secure your Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) and pay the Tourism Levy. The ETA is NZ$12 (NZ$9 on the free app) and the Tourism Levy is NZ$35. Australian citizens are exempt from both fees, but Australian permanent residents need to pay the ETA.
Please check requirements for travel to New Zealand and any countries passed through in transit. A passport is required for international travel. We recommend your passport expire at least six months after your return home.
What positive impact will I have by taking this trip?
In addition to contributing to local economies and family-run enterprises, your trip celebrates the region’s cultural heritage. By sharing your experience with friends and family, you can also help to spread awareness about New Zealand's delicate ecosystem and the best ways for visitors to have a positive impact.
Trip Leader
Lee Saunders
Lee's passion for showing people New Zealand is evident as soon as you meet him. Having grown up in and around Queenstown and traveling the length and breadth of New Zealand, he knows the country like the back of his hand. Lee grew up on a sheep and deer farm in the lower South Island. In 1986 he moved with his family to Queenstown where his father worked on the famous Clyde dam. Lee played rugby and did rowing at school in Dunedin. After school Lee worked a variety of careers including forestry, road construction, and running a large bitumen sealing crew in Australia. He returned to New Zealand in 2014 and started guiding and the rest is history. He lives in Queenstown with his partner, his 7-year-old rugby-loving son, and their energetic black Labrador.
